The Japanese take their art of making sushi very seriously. The same can be said about eating sushi. Here are some sushi etiquettes for you to follow:
- Chopsticks should be placed parallel to you on the holder or on the shoyu (soy sauce) dish.
- DON’T put wasabi directly into the shoyu. The two should be separate and be used on the fish as needed.
- Sushi can be eaten with your fingers because it is finger food. Although, chopsticks should be used if you are eating sashimi.
- When adding shoyu to your sushi, dip the fish side into the dish, not the rice side.
- Gari (ginger) is considered a palate cleanser and eaten between bites or different types of sushi. It is not meant to be eaten in the same bite as a piece of sushi.
- Eat each piece of sushi in one bite. You can ask your Itamae (sushi chef) to make it smaller for you.
- Never pass food to someone using your chopsticks. Pass the plate instead and allow them to take from the plate.
- It is considered good manners to offer your Itamae a drink if you are sitting at the sushi bar and having drinks with your meal.
Knowing these basic suhsi etiquettes will have you enjoying your sushi meals like a pro. |
